CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

1.1.  Background of the Problem
            English is an important language in the world. It is significant and dominant role in world affair is getting more crucial along with the vast growth of science and technology. As we know that the majority of science and technology and other information about it are written in English. No wonder, many people are motivated to study this language. Indonesia has also included English as one of the compulsory subject studied from junior high school up to tertiary education.
            In studying English, there are four skills, which must be mastered by the students. Those are listening, speaking, reading and writing. They are as objective of the students in learning English. Among the four language skills above, reading is more stressed because by reading, the knowledge of the students will gradually increase which it may cause the increase in the other language skill, such as listening, speaking and writing (Tarigan, 1950: 3).
            The above opinion, describe that reading is important skill for the students to increase capability in obtaining information from the texts being read. So, studying about reading, reading habit has important role because as much as we read, it can give us more information. Reading as one strategy for developing students knowledge (Finnochiaro and Bumfit, 1983 in Jasman, 2000: 15) say that development of reading activities will help learners to reinforce their listening and speaking abilities rather then writing skill. In other words, the students in comprehending the other language should master reading skill.
            As we know that the fundamental purpose of English language teaching in Indonesia as stated in the English curriculum is to enable the learners to use the target language to communicate either in written or spoken form. Along with this target, the mastery of English vocabulary is one of the most important key to successful communication.
            Vocabulary is one of the elements of a language that has very important functions. Someone cannot comprehend well at what he listen to or read about something without involving vocabulary. Someone cannot speak appropriately without the available-knowledge of vocabulary.
            In classroom teaching learning activities, however the teaching of vocabulary has less emphasis than the other language elements like structure or reading. This is reasonable because as we know, the emphasis of language teaching nowadays is one of communicative competence. Some expert and practitioners believe that there is no point to teach vocabulary indirectly and integratedly with other language skill. For example, when we teach reading, we can also introduce new vocabulary. In other word, students can learn new vocabulary while they are learning other language skills.
            Based on the background of the problem, the writer is so much interested in investigating the correlational study on students reading habit and their vocabulary mastery for the first year Students of SMPN 2 Labuhan Haji in the school year 2005/2006.
1.2.  Statement of the Problem
1.      Is there any correlation between reading habit and vocabulary mastery for the first year students of SMPN 2 Labuhan Haji in the school year 2005/2006?
2.      To what extent is the correlation between reading habit and vocabulary mastery for the first year students of SMPN 2 Labuhan Haji in the school year 2005/2006?
1.3.  Objective of the Study
            Based on the research problem, this study is aimed at finding out:
1.      Whether any correlation between reading habit and vocabulary mastery for the first year students of SMPN 2 Labuhan Haji in the school year 2005/2006.
2.      Levels of materials of vocabulary items of first year students of SMPN 2 Labuhan Haji in the school year 2005/2006.
1.4.  Scope and Limitation of the Study
            In order to lead the writer to specific field of discussion as well as to focus on the problem of the study, the writer needs to draw a certain scope of this investigation. It is limited to cover the following points:
  1. Research Subject
Subject of this research are the first year students of SMPN 2 Labuhan Haji in the school year 2005/2006.
  1. Research Object
This research is limited on the correlational study on students reading habit and their vocabulary mastery.
1.5.  Significance of the Study
            This study focuses in investigating the correlational study on students reading habit and their vocabulary mastery for the first year students of SMPN 2 Labuhan Haji in the school year 2005/2006. The theoretical significance of this study is that the result can be applied as a basic knowledge to further research. This sample research is also expected to have some practical usage such as:
  1. Theoretically
a.       The result of this study is expected to have contribution to the other researchers who have relevance topic by this study in order to make some developments theory on reading habit and vocabulary mastery.
b.      The result of this study is expected to be able to assist students on vocabulary mastery.
  1. Practically
a.       To give information about the students reading habit and about their vocabulary mastery.
b.      To motivate the students to improve their reading frequency.
c.       To inform English teachers that reading can be an appropriate strategy to improve students’ vocabulary.
1.6.  Assumption of the Study
            It is essential to describe assumption to avoid any factors of which may causes bias in the result of this study.
  1. The first year students of SMPN 2 Labuhan Haji like reading any English reading material.
  2. The first year students of SMPN 2 Labuhan Haji have mastered vocabulary.
1.7.  Hypothesis of the Study
            Hypothesis is statement of assumption about the prevalence of a phenomenon of about a relationship between two variables that plan to test within the framework of our study (Kumar, 1993: 19). In other word (Borg, 1983 in Zulpiani, 2003: 3) states that hypothesis is educated guesses about possible differences, relationship or causes. Furthermore (Tuckman, 1978: 23) state that hypothesis is an expectation about event based on the generalization of the assumed relationship between variables.
            Hypothesis of this study is formulated as: there is any correlation between reading habit and vocabulary mastery for the first year students of SMPN 2 Labuhan Haji?
1.8.  Definition of Key Terms
            To avoid ambiguity, misunderstanding or misinterpretation of the terms used in this study, the writer describes some key terms such as:
  1. Reading Habit
This term refers to the students’ frequency in reading and the type of material they read. Reading habit in this case is meant by the frequency of the students in reading some English material.
  1. Vocabulary
Hornby (1974: 34) defines vocabulary as the total number of words with the rules for combining them that build up a language. In this study, the term vocabulary refers to a number of words that should be mastered by the first year students of SMPN 2 Labuhan Haji as addressed by the English curriculum of 1994. The list of the words that can be found at the appendix of English syllabus for SMP.
  1. Mastery
The word mastery in Longman Dictionary of Current English defined as the state of having a lot of skill as the result of a long experience or learning (Spargo, 1980: 644). In this study, the term mastery refers to the students’ ability to understand and to use a number of certain words as required by the curriculum. Mastery in this case is indicated by the students’ score in vocabulary test given.
